Thanks for your replies. The problem was with the parallel lines. It is not
sufficient to only unplug the phones before the splitter.
When I connected the splitter to the first phone jack in the house, my
connection revved to life. I guess I should have tried this earlier without

Try Gentoo. It currently uses 2.6.13-r3 stable and 2.6.13-r4 testing.
(but of course, if you're on fc, it'd be easier to just look for an
rpm... rather than spend 2 days installing :D )

stable version with a release cadidate (-rc) kernel.
To upgrage your existing kernel, u will need to look around the web to
find a RPM, so that u upgrade your kernel *smoothly*!!
