Hi,
more important is, were the new extension included or not? If
just the build old it may be an unwanted side effect.

Have you built 'shared' GD support ? If you, you must
enable the php shared gd library in the php.ini file
extension=gd.so
(check if extension_dir is proper set)
You can also do this on-demand in your scripts
installed, up2date, complete, etc.
My guess is that 'mysql' (client) is broken too from what it
depends on on my system:
mfischer@ficken:/usr/include$ ldd `which mysql`|grep -i libz
libz.so.1 => /usr/lib/libz.so.1 (0x400cc000)
.. but I could be wrong. As a first shoot, try &
ischer@ficken:~$ ls -l `which apxs`
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root20757 Dec 7 00:41 /usr/bin/apxs
I could send you the file, its about 20k perl script, but it
depends on so many local apache installing things, so before you
could think about a working apxs you would shoot youself
w-r--r--1 root root 7810 Sep 25 15:19 /usr/include/zconf.h

re , you have
to edit the Makefile and make sure that CFLAGS and LDFLAGS
contain the proper includes and libs.
