Try installing a patched version of libgd 1.8.3 which
supports Gif, Png, Jpeg, Xpm and Wbmp from
http://www.rime.com.au/gd .
Note that libgd doesn't come with a fancy ./configure , you have
to edit the Makefile and make sure that CFLAGS and LDFLAGS
contain the proper includes and libs.
