I executed
ldd -r {path}/libphp4.so
and found that I too enjoy quite a number of undefined symbols. In my case,
the first offender is the undefined symbol uncompress.
What steps did you take to overcome the problem?

I apologize. Re-checking the file, I had used the lines
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 . .phtml
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
The problem persists. I still get the dialog box asking "Save As..."

I'm getting the same problem.
How can I check whether my php4 running? I thought php4 is invoked by
Apache when it is pointed at, among others, .php files.
