I apologize.  Re-checking the file, I had used the lines

        AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 . .phtml
        AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

The problem persists.  I still get the dialog box asking "Save As..."

I think the problem is in the AddType line.  Instead of using a type of
x-httpd-php4, try x-httpd-php.
