Thanks to all who commented. I guess I'll be looking closer to the Olympus 520
and 420. The highest quality I want is when I bootleg concerts on occasion.

use external mics and line in as well as to feed the output

Yep, no problem with those at all. Actually Goldwave supports just about any
format so long as there are plug-ins around for it to use.

Are you trying to open a MP3 or save to MP3? If saving then select file menu,
select save as and you'll find "MpEG MP3 Audio" as listed as one of the formats
you can save to.
When opening a file selected "All supported formats" in the file type of
Goldwave and you should be able to locate MP3 f

I think i am having an audio feed or audio player issue with radio
