I am wanting to record from the line output of an amplifier onto my ASUS Eee
1000H notebook. The notebook only has a microphone in
socket, so if I use a standard lead, it overloads. I have only tried it with
Sound Recorder so far, but will install other
recording software if I can fix the inp

Did you try relocating the power supply?
I'm asking because if you put a power supply on top of an amplifier, it will
make all of those noises.

You had it right the first time, you will need a USB sound card with a line
in jack.
Trying to run a line out in to a mike in as you discovered, just will not
work.

We had the power supply as far from the laptop as we could from the
beginning.
I still think that the problem probably lies with a power supply that is not
properly shielded.
