It might be worth trying Winamp to manage and edit playlists. I don't
use Hal but I know there are Hal scripts for Winamp. However I don't
know what enhancements these scripts add to using Winamp. Also if your
friend buys Winamp Pro he'll be able to rip CDs using Winamp at whatever
spee
Yes it's a good accessible program and I heard good reviews from other
lists as well.
