Ok, so that's obviously what I've done that's stuffed that up, I
don't like the default Winamp plug-in as it doesn't seem as easy to
configure as the other one available, can't remember the name of it
off hand.

Try changing your output in Winamp preferences. You might have Directsound
output, you could change to waveout. You can also change the directsound
output fading settings.
Also, the repeat rate of your keyboard may be to high for Winamp to keep up
with the current output settings.
