If you just want an mp3 player that uses a thumb drive and nothing else, the
below solution would be overkill and is expensive, over $300, but here's
info on a device that will do what you want.
Humanware makes a device called the Victor Reader Stream. I just got mine
this past Thursday
Interesting product. But, the link doesn't exactly work. I'm looking for a
