Hi Paul.

If you just want an mp3 player that uses a thumb drive and nothing else, the
below solution would be overkill and is expensive, over $300, but here's
info on a device that will do what you want.

Humanware makes a device called the Victor Reader Stream. I just got mine
this past Thursday, and I don't have an SD card yet, so I'm using it with a
1 GB thumb drive. It plays music from that drive with no problem. It's
designed with the blind in mind, so it gives audible feedback, usually
spoken.

The Stream is also designed to play NLS Talking Books, books from
Audible.com, Books from RFB and D, mp3 files, and text files, to name some
of what it does. It has an external speaker that's of limited use, a slot
for SD cards, and a USB port on it. It has a removeable battery that lasts
up to 15 hours per charge. You can learn more about the Stream at

http://humanware.com

I almost forgot, you can also record notes on the Stream, but this doesn't
work with a thumb drive. It's designed to record lectures with either an
internal or external microphone. I haven't tried this feature out yet, but
once I get an SD card I will be seeing how well it works.

Hope this is helpful.
