I don't know if the Olympus DM-520 will record from a line input without an
attenuation cable, since I don't have one yet. I was
hoping for some advice before purchasing one in case it doesn't meet my
needs.

Barry a reply to your line input question, and a few brief thoughts on the
(DM550) not the 520. But the similarities between them are enough I think to
be applied to the 520, which as far as I recall doesn't support uncompressed
recording as the 550 does.
