Barry a reply to your line input question, and a few brief thoughts on the
(DM550) not the 520. But the similarities between them are enough I think to
be applied to the 520, which as far as I recall doesn't support uncompressed
recording as the 550 does.

I got delivery of the Olypus 550 the other day and I can tell you it just has
a mic input on the top of the recorder, between the built-in microphones. You
would certainly need an attenuator lead for it to accept line level input.
You'd also have to crank back the mic sensitivity to "dictation" i think it's
called to get the lowest sensitivity on the single external input. that's
done in the record menu under microphone sensitivity. There isn't an external
swich on these models to do this. that said, at least that part of the menu
system is labeled with voice guidance.

/few thoughts to end with. My impressions of the 550 so far are very good and
I've already recorded a play rehearsal and an exercise meeting earlier today.

Just end by remarking that the recorder actually comes with rechargable
batteries which can be topped up via the USB port on the bottom of the
recorder. Just holding the stop button while the machine is off whilst
inserting the usb lead connected to a powered USB socket on your PC gets it
charging. I've used an USB charger too that works with my Zenstone player and
that charges the batteries too.

A remarkable semi-pro machine, I'd call it, as it does have a 48Khz sampling
rate as well as 44.1Khz. in it's neat case cum stand, fits very nicely in a
pocket. Oh, and there's little or no handling noise too when you're doing
interviews. For me the only niggle is the on-off switch doesn't feel that
obvious to me. It's located on the back belowe the stop and play buttons, and
I usually have to get a finger nail in, or feel around for it in order to turn
the recorder off. There is of course a locking position for this switch when
you click the switch right away from you and toward the top of the recorder.

All in all a good quality recorder at a relatively affordable price with a
good measure of accessability, not up to the Plextor Pocket standard, but then
it doesn't cost as much. I'm almost prepared to say it's a very poor man's
Nagra! If that's not going O T T!

Ray.

hoping for some advice before purchasing one in case it doesn't meet my needs.

Do you need one or will the unit itself make the electronic accommodation?
