For packages like mac80211, a lot of contributions go straight upstream to the
kernel actually. It's understandable that openwrt.git maintains its own
stabilization branch using quilt on this package.
But it also makes sense for some users to generate OpenWrt firmware with a more
recent version

Same here. We actually used it to interface OpenWrt with SCM which are not
supported natively by OpenWrt like P4.

Right; I actually fixed it as part of PATCH 3/4. I will post an updated set
which will remove it from this patch and post it separately.
