So the second part of this is a mistake on my part. Config_dir registry
entry in HKLM/Software/OpenVPN wasn't set so it was searching the entire
disk for config files.
However the first part of the question regarding the deprecation of
OpenVPN GUI registry entries still applies.

seems to imply that most of the traditional Registry Entries that could
be used to configure the behavior of the the OpenVPN-GUI tool are
ignored/deprecated?
