I then downloaded the source for build #80 and compile it, the compile

I agree with Sergey that the port should be configurable to make it
possible using port >1024, still it may be 80 port by default. Right now
there are no known issues to have that implemented without httpd, still it
requies some work. Rtmp will use 1935, but fall back to that default port

I am using OM on port 80 and there is no problem. In fact I could
not understand your problem clearly. Can you post error messages or
warnings in the logs. That would make the issue clearer, I think.
Moreover, there is an issue that, as I
nobody works well for port 5080, but not for
port 80, and I cannot understand why that might be.
One thing I could try is to create a full account called "openmeetings"
which has a home directory and then try running OpenMeetings under this
