I mean that it gets sorted right with the '-R' option but when I don't
open the INBOX in read-only mode it sorts badly.

I've been using mutt for months now and I like my mails to be sorted by
thread and by date in reverse order. It was always working but I
recently added a new INBOX and it doesn't work anymore. I have no idea
what's happening.
In my config I have the following:

You could also try using tmux or screen (those are multiplexers). It
won't resolve your terminfo issues but I think it would be helpful for
you.
