If you're building from the FreeBSD ports tree, you can specify slang
instead of ncurses by defining WITH_SLANG.

likely a function of your editor

The spoolfile is already aliased to '!
A_NORMAL (color.c) and KEY_NPGAE (keymap.c).

I built it successfully about a year ago using slang. No problems
(except the compilation took hours on a DECstation 5000/125 ).
