The moorhen was present this morning at 10:30 on CR 13, 2.8 miles S of US 212
just east of Brownton. Also present during a 15-minute stop were yellow-headed
blackbird, ruddy ducks, ring-necked ducks, pied-billed grebes, red-winged
blackbirds, marsh wrens, wood ducks.

Thanks to everyone for the fast response. No luck today with the thrush, but I
did get a good look a few weeks ago. No luck with the snowy either, but two
days of birding with my AZ friends mostly in Sax Zim/ Duluth got us 47 species,
including 2 goshawks, BB woodpeckers, ST grouse, hoary redp
I spent a few hours today at Wild River State Park in Chisago County. When I
arrived at the visitor center, there was a noisy red-shouldered hawk soaring
low over the parking lot. I had to wait an hour but the the Carolina wren
finally made an appearance giving a nice look. Lots of fox sparro

at 6pm and watched a couple of tom turkeys sparing for a while. I walked over

Tuesday morning Vic Lewis, Bill Brown and I spent a chilly, breezy, buggy
morning birding Sherburne NWR. Counting birds we saw driving up and back we
got 71 species.
We were not able to find the cerulean warbler and it was too windy to hear the
least bitterns. Highlights were a great view of
Vic Lewis, Bill Brown, and I went out for a few hours this morning looking for
some of the recently reported birds. 56 species in a a short three hour outing.
At Purgatory Creek there were two snowy egrets, about 75 pelicans, Caspian
terns, least sandpipers, lesser yellowlegs, etc.

The surf scoter was present today at noon on Peltier Lake just north of
Centerville in Anoka County. It was on the east side of the lake visible

Several people have back-channeled asking for directions to where I had found
the owl last night. It was at the same location reported two times earlier
this month by others.
Enter Resevoir Woods from Larpenteur. Go down the path from the east end of
the parking lot. Go to mile marker 0.3.
The bird was present mid-afternoon on a barge on the Mississippi River in
Winona.
All, note that I very carefully posted a photo to "Recently Seen" checking
the date to be sure that it said August 14. The photo on the website says
August 15 which isn't even here yet!

I found three this morning at 8:30 in the reeds between the bath house and the
lale, where Bob Dunlap reported them yesterday. Difficult to see, staying
mostly down in the reeds.

I went to Tamarack Nature Center this afternoon to try to find a Ramsey County
Harris's sparrow. No luck again. (Anyone know where I can find one in Ramsey
County?) Nothing too exciting except for 75 bluebirds calling and feeding in
the grassy field and swamp until I went on the boardwalk nor

phalarope which I thought was a red-necked. But, on further thought might it

Mississippi River at the boat landing, Old Frontenac, with first-cycle

I watched the ibis for ten minutes then slowly got out of my car. I took one
lousy photo, set my scope up and got a brief, very good look through my scope,
then it flew calling beyond the trees to the SE. No trace of white or red on
the face. I believe it is a glossy.

About a dozen of us enjoyed a perfect fall morning walk today at Westwood
Nature Center. We saw a total of 30 species including lots of white-throated
sparrows, robins, gokdfinches, and pied-billed grebes. Plus a few ruby-crowned

This sounds like the golden eagle I saw SW of there. It was a stunning bird.

There were 10 American white pelicans this morning on the Ramsey County side of
the Mississippi River, across from the Kaposia dog park. Same place as last
winter. Also golden eyes and common mergansers in the open water.!

I took a drive this moning to Point Douglas and saw the juvenile black scoter
reported earlier by Doug Kieser and Howard Towle, swimming near shore just
north of the marina. Couldnot find the long-tailed duck.
On the way home I stoppd at Vadnais Lake and met Ron Erpelding who told me
about a f
No luck finding the eider this morning 9 to 10am.

Two at 4pm today. One along Aitkin CR18 1 mile west of Hebron Cemetery. The
second along Hwy 169 1/2 mile south of CR18. Good look at a ruffed grouse
feeding along CR18 also. Nice end of a frustrating day with no eider in Duluth
and no winter finches and not much else either in Sax Zim Bog.
