Spent yesterday morning in Aitkin County, covering Kestrel Avenue, Palisade,
CR 5, CR 18 and CR 1.
* 8 Sharp-tailed Grouse on Kestrel Avenue, three one mile south of Tamarack,
five about three miles north (farmer's field, west side of road).
* 5 Pine Grosbeaks feeding on grit on Kestrel Avenu
I traveled around the county yesterday afternoon and found a few things.
I had three NORTHERN HAWK OWLS: one was on hwy 169 about 3/4 mile south
on the junction with C.R.18, the second was 6/10 mile west of Pietz's
Road along C.R. 18 and the third was on C.R. 18 about 7/10 mile west of
C.R.5. A

Diane and I made the trip up to Sherburne NWR in hopes of finding Diana
Doyle's find of yesterday (with Linda Sparling)
Her directions were excellent and we found the trail and the spot where
yesterday's sighting took place with no trouble at all.

Very beautiful up in the bog with bright sunshine. Few birds to be found.
The number of white-winged crossbills seems to be down lately. There were a few
redpolls scattered about. Gray jays were easy to find on McDavitt and Admiral
roads.

My wife and I saw a N. Hawk owl on the north side of State Hwy 200
approximately 1/4 to 1/2 mile east of mile marker 184 approximately 10 miles
east of Hill City (Hwy 169 intersection) on 1-29-10 at approximately 2:00 pm.

Today, January 31, I refound the Varied Thrush at house on the SW side of Elk
Lake, north of Zimmerman. He did not come to the feeders, but after some
searching I found him resting, then preening in a conifer behind the front yard
feeders.
I returned to 253rd for crossbills, saw-whet and soli

As of today there has been 65 reported Northern Hawk Owls in northern
Minnesota. The numbers maybe closer to 70 as I did not add some reports with
no mileage or detail information as to where the observer actually saw the owl.
