o, the options available then would be to get a sound card for the
machine or try to upgrade to bttv 0.9x. Do you know whether the btaudio
that comes with 0.9x has the necessary functionality?

test.qt is fine for both audio, video and sync. It is only in
subsequent attempts that this becomes a problem.
Is there some way that I can get lavrec to return the volume to normal
after it ceases recording?
I am using mjpegtools v. 1.6.1.90
