Like I said, I'm looking for ideas at this point, and I'm willing to poke
and tinker more. With a little direction on what to look at next.

I wrote (lavtc.bash) is closer, I think, and it definitely tries to be a
utility that users can use directly. But it was never intended as a drop in
replacement).
