Hi, If it’s not visible in the system prefs, then odds are the drive was not made properly. I suggest you look at using Disk Maker X to create your boot thumb drive, it’s a lot easier than the terminal and will give you nice error messages if something goes wrong. —k Faith doesn’t give you the

Nah, this is sadly expected behaviour. The drive is in fact bootable, but the files needed by the OS X boot picker aren’t included. You’ll have to hold the Option key down while starting up your Mac to bring up the firmware boot picker, and then guess; usually just press left then Return will

Anders, I take it you want to select this USB drive in system prefs so you can boot from it. What may work is to disconnect all external drives then while holding the option key, boot up. I just did this the other day but am sure I had just the one choice and was able to boot from that USB

Ramy, This password reset needs to be done from within the recovery console. You can't do it from a running machine. And when you open terminal, I must admit I can't remember if it's passwordreset or resetpassword Which ever one it is needs to be the command with no gap between the words.

You should with el cap or Yosemite get a list of utilities with disk utilities at the bottom , help, Install from time amchine backup. Etc. I personally recommend when you get this go into the disk utilities and find your Mac HD and eraise it so you install from a clean slate. -Original Mess
