8 is plenty. I have never used terminal for this as DiskMaker X
makes the process a painless one. Its a free app.

I tried to boot it from the recovery partition and select startup disk from
there but no go.
The usb stick is an 8 gb sandisk cruzer ultrablade.
Maybe i should try a bigger one.
