I note the compact and non compact versions: thus my conclution that it's a

The Apple voices are the quickest to respond to key presse

I stand corrected. After polking around, there is a check box to "display
mirroring options in menu bar when available" in System Preferences > Display.

mode, then it's not currently connected to anything. The only way I know
therefore to reconnect it would be to go to the bluetooth devices list on
whatever you wanna connect it to, in this case, yoru mac, then manually

Are you saying that you don't see the icon in menu extras at all, or is it
more, you see it, but the apple TV isn't showing up as one of the nearby

but I really doubt it. I think that's only for audio, not picture.
