Yep, that sounds like just what i would need if it wasn't for the fact that
sighted assistance is nowhere to be found for me. I have home help, but their
time is very, very limited since they have others to visit, so i guess the

There's no time limit. However, she might have the email disabled in settings.

The use function keys to control volume, mute etc., have now ceased to function
on my Mac.
I have checked in system preferences under keyboard and all is correct that is
use function f11 f12 etc., is checked.

If that setting is checked, that means you must press the function key (bottom
left) to use the top row for volume, brightness, and other controls. If not
checked, that top row of keys by themselves will access the controls, and the
function key is needed for any keystroke involving one of them
