I think you need to uninteract from that point. selecting memory, or other
settings, kicks you into a sub level of the toolbar I think and uninteracting
once or twice will let you move again.

In short, you're screwed. Unless you have an external HD and a way of

Normally, if there's something physically wrong with the drive, it will either
take forever attempting the re-format or just fail entirely. Sometimes, I've
tricked a drive and made it last longer by partitioning it with more than one
partition, and formatting it MSDOS with the Master Boot
Makes me wonder if the drive isn't having issues. In Disk Utility, if
you get info on the drive, somewhere in that list of parameters like
Total Capacity andPartition Number should be S.M.A.R.T. Status which
should say "Verified" or the like. If it says "Failing" then your drive
is not long for

VO-Cmd-Eject is the best way to shut it down. It's all to easy to hold down the
Power key for too long and shut the Mac down brutally without it having the
chance to close down tidily.

You can also do a clean shut-down by quitting all applications and then going
into the Apple menu and choosing "shut down". You will get a dialog asking you
to confirm. Just press enter, which will press the default button, which is
"shut down".
