When using a Windows keyboard on a Mac, keep in mind that the Windows logo key
serves as the Command key, and the ALT key as the Option key.
These keys can be remapped, but I’ve never bothered to do that.

Basic troubleshooting. Remove all the extraneous variables, and see what
results you get.
Next step would be to try a different USB keyboard and see what happens.

I connected a external USB keyboard to it for the first time, and for
some reason the modifier change doesn't work. I do exactly the same as
on the iMac, go swop them around inside modifier keys under Keyboard
preferences but it doesn't work.
Ok, Tim, I'll keep it in mind. Thanks. had this problem before when waking up

Hi,
I think that this has something to do with another screen gaining VO focus.
The Login screen is usually totally accessible if you attempt to use it right

you need to either click a mouse or trackpad to bring focus

password field just fine. Would there be a way to troubleshoot this that anyone
knows of?
thanks,
