I have to say I won't miss it when I get one of the new MBAs with function
keys. I do like how you can contextualize the touch bar, but I do find it
cumbersome to use. I often have to double-tap multiple times to activate a
command, and I never have to press function keys multiple times.

I agree. If you also spend the time learning how to take advantage of it, it
actually can be very helpful. You can map frequently used commands to it in
specific apps and take advantage of double tapping on the command to activate
