Hi,
Most likely not. It's due to a decoding problem. You might try updating VLC to

Nope. This is just adding the ogg codec stuff to quicktime on your
computer so iTunes (which uses QT) can handle it. Has no effect on
supported audio codecs on other devices. But with ogg files in iTunes
you could use iTunes to batch convert them to mp3 for your iPad.

I used to play *.ogg files in Itunes. There's an app called "set ogg," which
sets permissions so they can be played. However, this doesn't work any more.
Anyone know another way to play OGG in Itunes 10.7?
Thanks. :)

Try Amadeus pro can grab it as a batch and then convert. There are others I'm
sure. But that's better than manually doing it with something like Audio
Highjack.

iTunes can convert files to MP3s. You can set this up in the iTunes
preferences, I believe. Apple uses the Advanced Audio Codec (AAC) for music
files if you're looking for something with higher quality.

Hi Ian,
As mentioned before, you can get VLC (Videolan) as a general media
player which will work for ogg files. iTunes doesn't natively support
these, but the QuickTime player which iTunes uses can handle ogg with
the xiphxt plug-in. Try using switch to convert to mp3. Here are

I have thought of starting to use ogg, but I have not done it yet. I

Well, unfortunately, many of the portable players simply don't support .ogg. I
have no idea why, because, as you pointed out, it's open source. However, it
might be a memory thing or, whatever. I am not that knowledgeable about
encoders, but, I do know that a lot of portable players lack .ogg

FYI, ogg is not lossless, it's lossey compression. Tons of information are
being discarded. Some people claim it sounds better than mp3 encoding but it's
just not as widely supported. More importantly, the reason why it appeals to
some is that there are no licensing fees.

Well, two easy answers.
1. mp3 is just well integrated into the ecosphere with strong and often
default support in both software and devices for many platforms. Just
like Internet Explorer for some is the internet, mp3 for some is the
standard audio file. That's not a technical problem.

Hi list,
Lyn and I were talking earlier, and we were wondering why people continue to
use MP3 files when there are lossless formats such as OGG? Some people are able
to hear the difference between something ripped at 320 kpbs and 160 kpbs for
example. My question is, why do people continue to
