On a couple of MACs running Mountain Lion and SnowLeopard respectively,
I'm seeing that the menu item for creating a new folder in the "Archive"
menu of Finder is dimmed in the Column View. In List View the item is
properly active. This happens when trying to create fo
wever, when I go to purchases, everything is dimmed. All of the
songs have no link or button associated with them, even though they're listed.

if a button is dimmed, it means that it is not assigned or supported.
in the case of a zoom button, this turns the app in lion into a full screen
window. most games will support full screen zoom but some do not, like
applications which don't support this function.

Yes, MArk, Lion will not install. I even erased my Mac's internal drive, after
backing it up of course, and still the hard drive is dimmed.

Your disk is probably partitioned in MBR format, and unfortunately Lion will
only install on disks partitioned in GUID format.
Place the VO cursor over the dimmed disk and press VO shift H and it should
tell you something similar to this.
