Thanks, Alex and others. So once i’ve interacted with the do not disturb
widget in the notification area, I saw a checkbox that reads, “hide banners and
alerts”. It was not checked. I checked it and it now appears in the menu
extras.

In Yosemite, open Notification Center, choose the Today view, and interact with
the widgets scroll area. The first one should be Do Not Disturb; interact with
it, and the only checkbox inside will tell you. Once enabled, the Notification
