No problem, we're all learning new things all the time.

In Yosemite, open Notification Center, choose the Today view, and interact with 
the widgets scroll area. The first one should be Do Not Disturb; interact with 
it, and the only checkbox inside will tell you. Once enabled, the Notification 
Center item in the Extras menu will say "Do Not Disturb Enabled", so if it 
doesn't say that, then DND is off.
