removing my neighbor's unsecured network from the choices, and turning airport
back on. It's still pretty quirky, (we had to reset again this afternoon).

I am so sorry for your network issues. There are few things more irritating
than trying to troubleshoot a network problem.
Be that as it may:
Is it possible that your router has been reset or experienced a power surge
lately?

I did try using control-f8. It mostly said "system UI server." I managed to
get it connected now. But, even when I go into advanced and try to change
network name and settings, though I hit "save changes", and "apply," it
defaults back to the "myqwest" name and settings

I've had VO behave similarly on occasion. It usually happens soon after I have
received the "Running on Reserve Power" dialog. Normally, if I turn VO off
then back on again, it behaves properly once again. In rare situations, I
restart the computer and then things work as they should.

You might try using control f8, this is the mac command for going to the status
menus.
