This might fix your problem it called Perian and adds support for
several formats of video to quicktime.

which will associate the new types with quicktim
AVI is just a container which may have audio or video tracks in any
number of formats. So in general QT will open an AVI but it might not
have the codec for one of the audio tracks. Hard to tell from here which
one it might be having an issue with.
