Hi This might fix your problem it called Perian and adds support for several formats of video to quicktime. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22923/perian
this is also helpful http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25243/perian%27s-type-installer which will associate the new types with quicktime player by default. If you still get no Joy you can use VLC which will play everything under the sun that I know of. On a side note installing perian will allow you to quicklook avi , swf, and other formats easily without having to open a player. Also http://www.macupdate.com/ is a great place to start when looking for software.
