Hello Paul. Your statement about Microsoft word is not accurate. If you launch
Microsoft word and just start typing in a blank document you are using the
normal template. In Pages you can either choose your template each time or
select a default template.
Templates set your default fonts, etc.
Hello Matthew,
Once the placeholder text is highlighted, you just start typing and it's
replaced with your own text.

Great! So when you want to type over this text, do you mouse click with VO to
do so or just start typing?
Thanks.
I'd like to become an iWork convert but have been able to get by with TextEdit.

Hello Matthiew,
Placeholder text is text that disappears as soon as you start typing over it.
It's used to show the layout of a document.
When creating templates, I make all replaceable text, placeholder text, but I
enter it in the format that should be used. So, for instance, in a template for
Hello Anne.
What do you mean by "place holder text?"
Thanks.

Hello Gigi,
To create tables with different width columns, you have to use Numbers then
select the cells you want to copy, press Cmd-C and paste the table into your
Pages document. Pages with VO can only create equal-width columns.
I have to use Pages all the time as I'm a translator, and get M
Thanks Anne. This kind of blew me away because it never occurred to me to
interact with the image. I'll do some more experimenting with this.
I have been typing material into TextEdit which eventually would be converted
into a table in Word by a reader. This works pretty good because I can get
Hello Gigi,
The templates in Pages contain quite a lot of placeholder text that disappears
as soon as you start typing over it. You can actually read it if you want to.
The inportant thing to remember is never to use Quick Nav in Pages, and that
you have to interact with the text, then use the
Hello Paul,
TextEdit doesn't print the filename at the top of each paper page.

Hi Anne.
Have I missed something here, but are not the templates in Pages images unless
you create them yourself? If they are images, can you change them so that they
are text? When I looked at the templates in Pages, I couldn't get VoiceOver to
read them. I could get them to work fine in Numbe
Hi Ann,
Very clear. So, to enter plain text with only blank lines between paragraphs,
there is no downside to stick with text edit? Do you happen to know if, just
like notepad does in windows, text edit prints the filename as header on each
paper page when you print your document? Wordpad just p
Hello Paul,
A template can save you a lot of work. You can, for instance, have a template
for personal letters and another for business letters. You can set up the top
of the letter and the end, choose the appropriate font, create paragraph styles
and have hotkeys associated with them.
You can
Hi Ann,
I'm not a user of pages but it makes me wonder. Why do you need a template at
all? There are none in text edit either, nor are there in other text editors I
know of. In ms word, they are also not manatory. What does a template do in
pages?
Paul.

Hello Denise,
In Pages Preferences, under General, you can select the template with which you
want Pages to open by default. This does not prevent you from getting to the
Template Chooser as there is a menu item with a shortcut for this.
And if you create your own templates, you can simply open
