I have tried to reproduce this problem with mail, but have been unsuccessful.
I’m not having these issues with mail for whatever reason. I can hit return on

Another workaround: mark all mail read; seems to make navigation possible
always. Of course, it also completely s up your read/unread status, which
actually makes it worthwhile

clarification. If you use VOJ to move from the message list to the message and
back, does mail still work like it should?

This seems to be intermittent. You don't have to close/reopen the window.
CMD+Tab away from and back to mail also seems to do the trick. So does toggling
VO off and back on. Yeah, it's annoying.
