try using Command + Shift + W to toggle Word count on/off.

In pages, go to edit, then Writing Tools, then Show Statistics and then a box
will open, I use the swipe on the trackpad to get to the wordcount area after
title and name and comments etc.
For spell check, do CMD+colon I think. CMD+semi-colon just checks that word I
think, while Cmd+colo
