Try going into System Settings > Sounds, and see if you can change your alert
sound.

But if it doesn’t work, follow the below instructions on disabling the security
feature.
If you are using High Sierra or Mojave,
There is a security feature you must disable first.
To do this, Boot into recovery mode,
by pressing command+R at boot up.

Oh ok yes. I was trashed by an issue for the last few days that
finally got resolved today so was not thinking clearly. I disabled the
user interface sound so will see if that is what I want. There are some
instances where I don't want to hear a sound effect that plays at the
same time with

Those items in the table of sounds are the “Alert” sound that is generated by
control-G in her terminal or beep in AppleScript. A little lower in the table
is a check box for sound effects and is only a checkbox. I have not studied if
MacOS X has any preferences to adjust sound schemes like
