I used to have a tosheba 1 TB harddrive that did this as well, but it was

There is a SMART Monitor utility you can download to check out the drive (might
not support USB drives) and see if it’s showing indications of a probable

macbook air and was able to find the external drive attached to the airport
extreme in finder without any difficulties.
