Ahh, I'm still on Snow Leopard. So maybe something broke or there you
need to turn up verbosity? At least on the VoiceOver utility on 10.6 in
the Verbosity section under the Text tab the third item is "While typing
speak" and I have mine set to "Words" while other options are
"Characters", both
Are you using Lion? I am not able to even get word echo when I press the space
bar. Ideally I would like the letters and words echo that voiceover normally
provides but word typing echo would be a start. However I cannot even get this.
