Thank you sir, but I think in this case, I compounded my problem by
trying to login and when that failed, trying to reset my password and
just made things worse. :) However, I think I'm on the right track for
correcting the mess.

If you can get new email but nothing else works, then the Mac must
know your password. You can retreive that password as follows:
1. Open Keychain access from your utilities folder (command-shift-u)
2 Hit tab and enter pop.gmail.com into the search text field.

here do to the account where they would have sent e-mail isn't what I
typed in. Something is messed up, but well this will pass and all will
