That only happens if latex is not able to find them. If you start lyx from
the console what does it output

Steve,
Thanks. I realized just after I sent the message that I should have
mentioned looking in the extended guide. I assumed -- wrongly -- that it was
too advanced for the users
The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary attachment.

I don't understand this: if I use \overrightarrow in certain places (both
in-line and display modes) then the document compiles error free. If I use
it in other places I generate a ton of errors, including some that are not
directly related to the symbol.

Well! Strange is correct. I just replaced all the \tilde with
\overrightarrow, one at a time, and now the document compiles without error.
Sigh.
Perhaps LyX just wasn't ready to begin work this

In math mode, first insert the square brackets, then insert a matrix

AFAIR, you should call the brackets or parentheses BEFORE callind
the vector (i.e. the underlying array).

Hi
If you look at the FAQ pages at the wiki site, e.g.
http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/FAQ/Unsorted
you'll notice that most of the questions now have a '@' appearing
before it. Further investigation would reveal that the '@' is a link
that points to itself. Since this might seem strange

If you're like me: "insert" must *not* be typed in (and trying to insert
it as a lfun doesn't work either...). Then it works beautifully.

In the frontmatter of my book the Preface (an unnumbered chapter) follows
the Table of Contents. When I view the dvi output (or print to pdflatex),
the header for the Preface pages reads "Contents" rather than "Preface".
At the very beginning of the Preface I have an ERT box with:

Sorry. I don't understand the question.

I was just wondering in terms of quality of output, features, what everyone
else likes to use, which one is better? Between pdflatex and dvipdfm. I seem
to hear a lot about pdflatex on the list. Maybe that is a bad.
Sorry about the last email. A little too brief.
