I use xFig 3.2.8 and would like to use it for a diagram to be inserted
as a graphic in a lyx document. Some blocks in the diagram use greek
symbols. Has somebody used xFig in such a way that LaTeX takes over the
text of the diagram? An example figure would be great.

It is a LyX issue. xfig (or any other program) does not know (and should not
need to know) about the internals of file inclusion of LyX.

I just installed the new version of LyX and I discovered that it can't
generate the pdf (with pdflatex) when pictures are drawn with XFig.
What I did is:
1) Insert -> Float -> Figure
2) Insert -> File -> External Material -> Template Xfig

Nope I hadn't.. but just tried it now and my 1.3.0cvs version crashed.
So I tried 1.2 and still get the same Latex errors saying "Undefined
Control Sequence }}}" .. my previous reply on this has the error message
and the lines in the xfig

remains.. on further investigation, I think the problem is with fonts
that XFig exports.. the error I get is:

The User Guide docs in section 4.3.3 states in item three that the xfig
LaTeX/Postscript combined output names would show foo.ps_tex and
foo.ps_tex_t.

Unfortunately not. I actually think it could (and should) be
implemented but it has not been done yet.
