And the good news is that the problem seems to have disappeared in forthcoming
LyX 1.4

It looks like the additional space only is inserted if you use an opening
bracket "[". Can you confirm this?

Hmm, been trying to use some IPA in documents - does anyone else have
the problem that when instant preview is used and you can see the IPA,
the formatting of the document is really weird (as in, you can't put
it inside a large amount of text, there is a very large gap between

I think you have to fool mathed. The following hack works for me (the
mathematicians might come up with a better solution):
In preamble:
\newcommand{\breakline
Thanks for updating the Wiki guys, you put a lot of stuff in there
that I didn't know about!!
Did anyone find out how to make it so glosses go under the nodes on
the tree - usually with the // command? Also, is there a way to make
it automatically preview all of the images once you open a document
The problem is that you are in math-text-mode at the moment. The
greek letters
have to be in math-math mode.
That is
\Tree [.$\sigma$ $\mu$ $\mu$ ]
oh, duh... okay, it's going in the linguist-lyx wiki.

I have edited the TIPA documentation. Most notably, xytree is not
needed at
all to enter \textipa.
thanks, jürgen! it's wonderful.

I added a few things to the Wiki. Feel free to flesh it out if you
want and add new things (I don't do any optimality theory for examples

I'll see what I can write on it - although if others could add to it,
it might be better, because frankly I did not know what I was doing
when I found out how to make it display IPA and trees. Also if this is
going to get removed in 1.4 should we wait to write it? (Although I've
been tracking the x

I started such a page, using some of your text:
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LinguistLyX
Now it just needs to be filled with information.

It's obvious LyX can support this stuff, we just have to get it

Stacia, this is great--I thought the only way to do trees and IPA in
LyX was in ERT. I don't know how many linguists are on this list, but
what do people think of starting a wiki page "LyX for Linguists,"
similar to "LaTeX for linguists"?

at least the tipa part will be useful.
Jürgen
I'd be happy to make an info page on the lyx wiki, except would it
really be useful, now that 1.4 is going to get rid of the xymatrix
support? That makes me really sad :(

Sorry about the spam, but I figured out how to get simple trees from

Here's what you do. Install xytree and tipa packages. Then try some
example things like this:
\xyma
