Yes, here it works. Debian testing, texlive 2007, lyx 1.6.5.
Try using an extended Palatino set called Pagella: set Roman font to
default and add in preamble \usep

No, the document has been created of "book" class.
Could you try doing the same on your system?
This might help to understand if it is a problem of my
installation or a general problem on Lyx (Latex)?
