I have done this successfully with Lyx 1.3.4 on OSX.
I just used Insert Citation. Nothing special that I can remember.

Using sixpack you can mark entries according to the .aux file. Then just
export to a separate bibfile.
IMO sixpack is a most excellent piece of software!

What can i do
Put your lyx file in a location that doesn't contain any spaces. C:\My
documents\my file.lyx will not work but C:\LyxFiles\my_file.lyx should
be OK.

But when I insert citations, this is the only "available" to select

Either my old preferences, (preserved from the previous version), got
mangled when I upgraded or I accidentally deleted it somehow!
