installed by Darwinports (assuming you don't have Fink installed as
well):
ln -s /opt/local /sw
Then Edit > Reconfigure, and away you go!

I'm not sure what you mean by dead letters, but in my experience keys
do not behave in *exactly* the way either of you have described in OSX.
In 10.3.5 (as for all versions I have used, which is from 10.2
