only to much older versions!

I can't seem to get "e with two dots" to work in the author field in prosper? Even
when I edit the latex by hand and add \"{e} it is simply ignored. In fact the letter
doesn't appear at all?
Is there any way to get this letter in prosper?
Cheers,
